Adoptable dogs in Raleigh

Raleigh’s adoptable dogs come from Wake County’s public shelter and from dozens of foster-based rescues around the city. Many rescues keep their dogs in volunteer foster homes, so you usually meet a dog by appointment rather than walking in.

Adopting in Raleigh

  • Apply first, then set up a meet-and-greet. Ask the foster how the dog handles car rides, other dogs and being left alone. They know the dog best.
  • North Carolina requires dogs to be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age and kept up to date. Ask the rescue for your dog’s rabies certificate.
  • Ask for every vet and vaccine record the rescue has, including spay or neuter, microchip number and any medications, and keep them together from day one.
  • Give a new dog a quiet first few weeks: a consistent routine, short walks, and time to settle before big outings or visitors.
